Many senior citizens are looking for ways to save money without feeling like they’re missing out on the things that make life worth living. We aren’t dishing out the same-old “senior discount days at the grocery store,” you already know that! There are plenty of ways that seniors can save money without giving up on what they love. So forget sacrificing to save— we’ve curated tips that will bring more joy and fulfillment to your world.
Here are four (fun!) money-saving tips for senior citizens.
Start an indoor garden
Who doesn’t love fresh veggies right out of the garden? Maybe you don’t have a yard or aren’t physically up for traditional gardening. The good news is that there are plenty of vegetables that can be grown indoors!
A few examples of vegetables that can be grown indoors in an indoor garden are:
- Carrots
- Potatoes
- Hot Peppers
- Leafy Salad Greens
If you don’t have time for a full-fledged indoor garden, consider having a few potted herbs on your windowsill. Basil is one of the easiest herbs to grow, and it’s great for use in pasta dishes. Lemon balm is another herb that is both tasty and beneficial. One perk that makes it especially interesting is that it can help with symptoms of depression.
Discover free entertainment for seniors
Sure, senior centers can be a great place to socialize with friends or participate in free senior citizen activities, but sometimes you want to get out of the same-old-same-old. Fortunately, there are free entertainment opportunities aplenty if you know where to look.
A quick Google search of “Free activities for seniors near me” will give you a great list. Or, local publications and newspapers will have these laid out as well.
Also, consider looking on meetup.com. These group activities generally meet in public places and connect you with individuals that share similar interests and hobbies.
Ditch the landline
Many senior citizens don’t need a landline when they can use their cell phones or Internet service to talk to people. Ditching the landline saves money and helps seniors live a more low-maintenance lifestyle.
I know what you’re probably thinking… where’s the fun in this?
I promised these tips would be fun and wouldn’t involve sacrificing things you enjoy. How on Earth could this one be fun?
Do you want to know a great added benefit of getting rid of your landline?
There are more laws restricting telemarketing calls to cell phones.
The calls still come through, but not nearly as many as on landlines! Plus, if they are calling on your cellphone and you are on the Do-Not-Call list, our consumer rights law firm may even be able to help you take action against them. I don’t know about you, but I find the potential of getting paid for a telemarketer’s willful ignorance of the law to be rather fun.
Hack your library… kindly.
Many libraries have many of the same perks as senior centers, but for free! In addition, they have senior citizen activities, senior discounts, events for the holidays, book signings, and social gatherings. Libraries also have a vast array of physical items to borrow if you find yourself wanting an activity that you don’t have time to plan. You can find everything from expected items like books, CDs, and DVDs to more surprising things like board games, language learning programs, and puzzles.
I’ve even found that my library offers free day passes to popular (and expensive!) amusement parks and zoos in our area. Who doesn’t like getting out to enjoy the local area for free?Struggling with debt?
If you’re struggling with credit card debt, it’s important to know there are special strategies for seniors to deal with debt. If you feel like there’s no way out, we want to help. We help people of all ages, but seniors, the disabled, and those on a fixed income have protections that aren’t always available to the working population.
